State’s first police chief dies at 90 – MUMBAI

K.P. Medhekar, the first Director General of Police of Maharashtra, died on Monday. The 90-year-old was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Oshiwara since May 24.

As Maharashtra police chief, Medhekar is credited with quelling the police revolt of 1982. About 9,500 of Mumbai’s 22,000 policemen had gone on strike and halted trains on the outskirts of the city and forced motormen out of their cabins.
